Our Journey

When I founded African Studio Safari’s, I brought with me extensive experience in overland safaris, from guiding to managing tours. My vision was clear: to establish a safari company that offers the same exceptional services as traditional operators, but with a keen understanding of the LGBTQ+ community's needs. Our goal is to ensure that every traveler feels safe, respected, and valued.

Overcoming Challenges
Having worked in the safari industry since 1994, I’ve encountered my share of challenges and discrimination. As a gay man, there were times when I wasn’t taken seriously—whether it was about changing a tire or leading a safari. I’ve also witnessed LGBTQ+ travelers feeling uncomfortable and unable to fully enjoy their trips. This inspired me to create a welcoming environment where everyone can be themselves.

Traveling as a Family
In 2020, my partner and I adopted a child, and our family travels have continued with wonderful experiences and minimal judgment. Our personal adventures underscore the importance of creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ families to explore the beauty of Africa.

LGBTQ+ Travel Destinations

South Africa
South Africa stands out as a beacon of acceptance for LGBTQ+ travelers. The country’s progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights makes it a safe and inviting destination. Whether you're exploring Cape Town’s vibrant scene or the scenic Garden Route, South Africa offers a welcoming atmosphere.

Botswana
In 2019, Botswana decriminalized same-sex relationships, marking significant progress for LGBTQ+ rights. Known for its stunning landscapes and premier safari experiences, Botswana is a great choice for LGBTQ+ travelers. While public displays of affection should be approached with caution, the country’s legal progress and welcoming safari lodges make it a top destination.

Mozambique
Mozambique decriminalized same-sex relationships in 2015, promoting a more tolerant environment. Major cities like Maputo are generally more accepting, though discretion is advised, particularly in rural areas. Mozambique’s beautiful coastlines and rich cultural heritage provide a unique and enjoyable travel experience.

Countries to Approach with Caution

Zimbabwe and Zambia
Both Zimbabwe and Zambia still criminalize same-sex relationships and have widespread societal hostility towards LGBTQ+ individuals. If travel to these countries is necessary, exercise extreme caution and discretion due to the significant legal and social risks.

East Africa: A Mixed Picture

Rwanda
Rwanda is relatively safer for LGBTQ+ travelers, with no laws criminalizing same-sex relationships. While societal attitudes can be conservative, Kigali is becoming more open-minded. Discretion is recommended, especially in rural areas.

Kenya and Uganda
Kenya and Uganda pose significant risks for LGBTQ+ travelers. Both countries have strict laws against same-sex relationships and prevalent societal hostility. Travel to these destinations requires a high degree of caution and discretion.

Safer Travel Options
For a safer and more inclusive travel experience in Africa, consider destinations like South Africa, Botswana,  Mozambique or Seychelles. These countries offer more progressive stances on LGBTQ+ rights, ensuring a more welcoming environment for all travelers.
